How to Install and Enable DreamScene in Windows 7

feature which allows a video clip, movie show, slideshow or animated image and picture to be set as the desktop background in Windows Vista has been removed in Windows 7, in favor of Desktop Slideshow wallpaper auto rotator. Although Windows 7 no longer supports DreamScane, the DreamScene function can still be manually added and installed into Windows 7 with a little hack in order to turn on and enable the DreamScene support in Windows7.

In order to enable DreamScene in Windows 7, the similar hack which allows DreamScene to be installed on non-Ultimate edition of Windows Vista such as Windows Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Enterprise edition is used. The DreamScene installation hack has been compiled into an executable, which automatically copy the necessary DreamScene files and merge require registry keys and entries.

Tip: To run DreamScene in Windows 7, Windows Aero has to be turned on.

How to Install DreamScene in Windows 7

For 32-bit Windows DreamScene: Run the Windows7-DreamScene.exe as Administrator to install and enable Windows DreamScene on Windows 7. The installer will copy DreamScene.dll to %WinDir%\System32 folder, DreamScene.dll.mui to %WinDir%\System32\en-US folder and add the required registry keys and values. Then it will automatically restart the Explorer to make the installation of DreamScene works immediately.

For 64-bit Windows DreamScene: Unpack the DreamScene_Win7_x64.zip archive, then copy DreamScene.dll to %WinDir%\System32\, DreamScene.dll.mui to %WinDir%\System32\en-US\. Run Dscene.reg to install the required registry keys and values. Restart Explorer or reboot to complete the installation.

A Windows DreamScene folder has also been created in %WinDir%\Web\ folder. You can place any video file that you want to set as DreamScene background wallpaper here as in Windows Vista, or anywhere you like. However, the folder is less useful as Windows 7 does not support direct viewing of video or animated media in Personalization Control Panel.

To apply a video clip (in .WMV or .MPG format) as the DreamScene animated wallpaper desktop background, right click on the video media file, and select Set as Desktop Background in the context menu. Due to DreamScene been stripped from Windows 7 issue, video files may not be visible inside Personalization and Desktop Background configuration page. However, all features of DreamScene, such as Play DreamScene, Pause DreamScene and sound/audio are supported.

Uninstall DreamScene from Windows 7
Windows 7 does not officially support Windows DreamScene feature, which introduced in Windows Vista as Ultimate Extras, and allows user to set a video or animation as desktop background wallpaper. Although there is a hack to install and enable DreamScene in Windows 7, but the result has been less than satisfactory, nor ideal.

After installing DreamScene in Windows 7, various problems may surface, most prominently is icons’ text descriptions on desktop become invisible or transparent error. Furthermore, with the inclusion of automatic desktop background wallpaper changing or switching capability as native built-in feature, DreamScene becomes less than a necessity.

For Windows 7 user who has install Dream Scene, and now wants to get rid of the DreamScene, can easily uninstall and remove Windows DreamScene without having to reinstall Windows 7 operating system. To remove and uninstall DreamScene from Windows 7, just download the following registry registration entries file which will clean system registry of any DreamScene registry keys and values.

The Uninstall-DreamScene.reg will remove all registry keys that been added to system when installing DreamSccene. After cleaning system registry, delete DreamScene.dll from %SystemDrive%\Windows\System32\ folder and DreamScene.dll.mui from %SystemDrive%\Windows\System32\en-US\ folder. Computer may need to be restarted before deletion can be done.

Enable Windows DreamScene Audio and Sound
By default Windows DreamScene will have audio and sound output turned off and disabled as mute. So even if you set a exciting video clip with surround sound and intriguing audio as motion desktop DreamScene background, there will be no sound play. However, users can always turn on or unmute the DreamScene audio output to hear the sound of the videos.

To enable or unmute the DreamScene, in the notification area (system tray) of Windows Vista desktop, click on the audio icon (speaker) to open the Volume Mixer. Then in the Windows DreamScene section under the Applications. Click on the mute button (crossed speaker) below the volume slide bar (which is grayed out and disabled) to get audio up and running. Increase the volume on slide bar if needed.
